Shaughnessy Group Research

The Shaughnessy group's interests are in the areas of organic and organometallic chemistry. We are interested in the mechanisms of organometallic reactions that are key steps in catalytic cycles. By understanding these fundamental reaction steps, we attempt to develop new or improved synthetic methods relying on organometallic catalysts. Areas of current interest include: cross-coupling reactions, novel bond forming reactions, and environmentally benign catalytic systems.

Research Opportunities

Opportunities are available for undergraduate and graduate students to participate in research with the Shaughnessy group.
Undergraduate researchers:  The Shaughnessy typically has a number of undergraduate students working in the lab each semester.  Motivated students who are interested in learning more about metal-catalyzed reactions are encouraged to contact Dr. Shaughnessy.  Students from all majors and class years are welcome.  Students who have taken at least the first semester of organic chemistry are preferred.  Students in the Emerging Scholars Program are welcome to explore possible projects with Dr. Shaughnessy.
Graduate Students:  The Shaughnessy group encourages interested students to consider applying to the graduate program in the Department of Chemistry.  Students can contact  Dr. Shaughnessy to discuss opportunities for graduate study in the group.
