The Shaughnessy group welcomed two new students in January. Andrea Nuñez León and Matthew Delahay joined the group. Andrea is pursuing a PhD degree. Her research focuses on developing methods to remove toxic metals from water. Matt is pursuing a MS degree and is doing research on novel palladium precatalysts for cross-coupling reactions.
James Howard received a Randall Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award for his work in the Shaughnessy group. The Randall award recognizes outstanding undergraduate research at The University of Alabama.
The Shaughnessy group presented 5 papers at the ACS meeting in New Orleans.
Kevin Shaughnessy gave a talk in the Homogeneous Catalysis for Applied Organic Synthesis symposium entitled, "Alkylphosphine cyclometallation as a mode of catalyst deactivation and a source of active catalysts." Ethan Hu gave a talk entitled, "Methods to reduce Pd(II) precatalysts to Pd(0) for cross-coupling reactions" in the Organic Division. Benjamin Headford presented a poster entitled, "Synthesis and catalytic application of asymmetrically substituted 1,3-diphosphines," in the Organic Division. James Howard presented a talk entitled, "Synthesis and catalytic application of asymmetrically substituted 1,3-diphosphines," in the Division of Chemical Education. Connar Franklin gave a poster in the Division of Chemical Education entitled, "Phosphine-free palladium catalysts for the direct arylation of heterocyclic aromatic compounds." Zoe Ziegenhorn has joined the group as an undergraduate researcher. Zoe is a French major pursuing a pre-health track. Her research is focused on the synthesis of bidentate phosphines with two different phosphorus coordinating groups.
Jordan Pierce has joined the Shaughnessy group as a PhD student. Jordan received her BS degree from Bellarmine University in Louisville, KY.
